The game is very slow, you miss a LOT of attacks, and this can be really frustrating and also just make the game less fun - it just doesn't feel great to be missing all of the time, especially when you lose a level because of it and have to start over. The UI was a pain - I think if you are very familiar with the tabletop RPG's rules you might be ok, but I found it very difficult to know how effective different choices would be, and in general just cumbersome to use the interface. As an RPG, it is distilled into battles and stats screens, so it never really felt like a really immersive experience for me. I thought it was decent, and I can see how people would enjoy it, but overall it just wasn't very fun. I played about 6 hours of the first one, so I can only talk about that. The story of Blackguards 2 builds on the story of Blackguards if I recall correctly so it's probably best to play them in order. I cannot comment on the story, I have only seen combat. Therefore, variation in combat comes not from enemy variation but moreso from battle map variation, special objectives and special objects (cover, exploding stuff, you know the drill) on said battle maps. You will have to replay some battles and the battles last a long time. The combat in general is hard, the game will only slightly forgive you for messing up (whether that be to a tactics error on your part or a missed die roll when you needed it most). The enemies are also fairly numerous every battle with little enemy variation, you will be seeing an awful lot of the same enemy type. For example, limited mana pool (really mean this, you will only be using spells every so often in battles), high chance to miss on spells, us of belt pouches (you can not just eat all your cheese wheels and drink the potions in your backpack during the middle of combat). The problem with both Blackguards games is that combat is fairly slow and arguably frustrating because of some mechanics you don't see a lot anymore in modern games.

This is purely from my own research, not my experience. Also, I've seen let's say 3-4 hours of Blackguards 2 on Twitch. PSA: Blackguards 1 is still sitting in my backlog, I have not played it yet, I have seen a bit of its combat. TLDR I can understand the mixed reviews, the games aren't masterpieces, but I feel they are better than that given their versatility and value. 2 is probably a better game mechanically, but after finishing 1 it's not different enough and story is too low priority to drag me in. The combat has a few new features but is generally similar, still good. The combat is definitely a higher priority in 2 though, there's much less other stuff (exploration/speech interaction for story progression). The story starts fairly interestingly but descends into a more monotone conquer the towns style after an hour or three (reprising all of the companions from 1, who have limited scope). I think that it's just due to it being fairly similar to 1 and i was kind of happy with the amount of it i played after finishing that. I haven't been hooked to 2 as much, so am only a few hours in. It's not a super exciting roller coaster, but it moves along nicely and does most things well imo.

I particularly liked the versatility (but permanent) progression choices, which could really impacted your playing style. If you like turn based combat RPGs and developing characters with skills/spells etc then it's a solid game. The story i thought fairly predictable but still fine. I'd definitely say they are worth it for that price if you like the genre.
